Time flies...

...when you're having fun!

On saturday we fixed the barrel in place, my mister made a wooden cross for it to stand on and we had to shorten the chutes, to direct the rainwater into the barrel. Looks great with the black barrel against the grey facade. As if it had been there always.

We enjoyed wine and cheese with friends later in the evening, cyckled home in a mild and beautiful evening.

On sunday I met up with my colleague Alva and her sisters, two small dogs and 12 new friends. We took our new friends out for a 3½hrs hike along the Kukuljärvi-trail.
The trail is 8km long and we had perfect weather, it was not too warm. The sun lurking behind a cloud.
We stopped for the view, a few times to catch our breath after a few heavy climbs, once we climbed using a rope and later for something to eat. A few of our new friends even dared to take a swim.
We had a wonderful day and I felt very happy to have made such wonderful new acquaintances.

Later in the evening me and my mister and our friends met up at our local Nepalese restaurant Pahuna and had a wonderful meal.

A happy and tired me fell asleep with a smile on my face!

I took this picture earlier in may, the little green thingy is a feltboll I made with my students.

Weekend in sight!

The weeks pass very quickly! It is weekend again.

I have for long searched for a large metal barrel for rainwater. Very essential as one needs to water plants. Many old houses have old metal barrels for this purpose, but my house lacks all these essentials, so I need to find them. The ones I have found available to purchase are made of plastic. So I have been searching the internet. And hooray, I found one! It cost very little. And the guy I bought it from had a company that transports drugs and laboratory tests and before I had even received paying instructions, the barrel was in my garden. He charged nothing for transportation, when I insisted I wanted to pay for it, he said, please, sometimes it is really important to not charge for everything. I know. And I couldn't agree more. I am very thankful. The universe is kind towards me.
The barrel was blue. During the week I painted it with anti-rust paint and finished off with two coats of black paint. I have certain details in black, the postbox, my outdoor lamp, thermometer and namesigns. Now the barrel is also black. My mister wants to build a small cross for it to stand on. I am just so grateful and spoiled. And very pleased with the outcome. I am happy I tried my best to find something that suits the house rather than settle for what is available.
Now my dear plants will be watered with rainwater.

Last night we had guests. I placed a white linen tablecloth on the table. For some reason it was very very wrinkled. It bothered me. Darling L said no-one will notice once the table has been set. I picked white lilacs, and when I lit the candles and looked at the set table, I could not see the wrinkles any more. Can you?

My darling prepared the most delicious and rich räkmackor, shrimps on toast with egg and mayonnaise, dill and lemon. We had mudcake with raspberries and whipped cream for dessert.

What a perfect evening, good food and drink and dear guests, can one wish for more! I already said it once, I say it once more, the universe is kind to me. Thank you!

Wishing you all a wonderful weekend!

Oh joy!

A finnish film called The happiest day in the life of Olli Mäki, has been named best film in this year’s Un Certain Regard strand of the Cannes film festival.

Here is the trailer, enjoy! I can't wait for it to premier in the autumn.

On another note, last february we attended a small venue, a concert. I wrote about it here.
It just so happens that the girl in the middle, is our lead actress in this particular film, Oona Airola. She happens to be one of the singers (and sisters) in the ever so charming Satamakadun seireenit -trio.

Good morning!

I was up and about early, I love to sit with my cup of coffee on my veranda, Muru the sweetest cat purring next to me, and watch the morning brake. And after a while climb back under the covers and listen to the radio.

I spent yesterday painting baseboards and moldings. I can tell you, one can feel one has a bum the day after...the jumping up and down a chair to reach the ceiling and climbing on all four! But all worth it as the outcome is fab!

Wishing you all a wonderful sunday!

Finally it is ready!!!!

May I present a ready cupboard. It turned out exactly as planned, I am so pleased!

Some of you may remember this post, from soon two weeks ago when the project started.
Feels so good to be able to complete projects.

Now time to say good night!

A spoon is a spoon... a handle!

My neighbour Sanne saw my newly built cupboard and asked if I was going to attach a knob for the door. I told her that it was my plan, once I found the right one. She immediatey suggested I make a handle of a spoon. What a great idea! Look!

From stone to house

You may have seen these stonehouses before. Well, I decided to make a few, as I have students whom like to make crafts. Some of my students need to see for themselves the outcome of crafts, before they feel they want to have a go. Hence I make "prototypes" for inspiration.
I made a few bigger ones for my garden, I'll show them once I placed them in place.

I used acrylic paint, if any of you feel like giving it a go. First paint the facade and roof. Let dry. Then paint windows and doors. Let dry. Paint details. Let dry and enjoy your houses! Why not make a village? I saw an image of a flowerbed that has plenty of houses as a border. Pretty!

Folding paper

I have always loved to fold paper.
It calms me. I love to fold origami.
I have folded many books, I also do it with my students. We get a lot of used books at school, so we have plenty material to practice with. I find that the students find it very calming to fold books.
Here are a few I have folded at home in my kitchen.

The weekend

...passed all too fast!

On friday I attended a fantastic gig in Helsinki. My former colleagues from the singing-group, have created a f a n t a s t i c performance called Poliittisesti jees.
I am so proud, so happy and I was so touched by the whole performance. It was hilarious and at times very very touching!

On saturday we started working with the baseboards and door moldings on my veranda. It takes nerves and even more surface is straight and there's and awful lot of adjusting, especially around the doors. I've bought old doors from old houses, they are not original from my house, as most of the doors in my house had been replaced with new ones in the 80's - and that is not the style I want. So that is why it takes time.
In the evening we attended the local choir's spring concert at Kappeli.
Later we decided to watch the ESC. So we bought pizza and crisps and some sweets and snug up on L's bed. Not sure how we managed to stay awake! Our favorite did not win, we had many, but hearing the winner-song again, it grew. This video is very touching.
When I cykled home in the night I was accompanied by the nightingale. The most beautiful birdsong echoing in the night. It was magical. I dare to confess that the nightingale is my favorite bird. Closely accompanied by the Blackbird.

On sunday we continued work...we're not by far ready. But we have definitely passed the more difficult phases, ah bless!

Sunrays and my thousandth post!

The sun does wonders to us all. I love the sun, though I cannot spend time in the sun, I have a fair complexion and burn easily.
Cats always look for the sunny spot, like my darling Muru.

Jeeee, it's friday the 13th, my lucky day!
And this was my thousandth blogpost, hooray to that!

Charging batteries

That is what I did on tuesday after a very short day at work.
I paid a visit to my friends O and J who live in a small cottage in a nearby village. The surrounding is forest, it is very peaceful and quiet.
I was first served delicious mango lassi, we sat on the veranda and listened to compilation cassettes of Carola (a finnish singer who unfortunately passed away far too early) and relaxed.

J prepared a delicious dinner, with plenty of chili and tofu and my favorite, coconutmilk.
For dessert we drank coffee from old china cups and had waffles with raspberries and whipped cream.

I had such a relaxing time in the company of two wonderful friends. I am blessed. Grateful.

Kiitos ihanat hemmottelusta!

Self love

This is going to be a rather long post, I am posting a self love -poem (in three languages, english, swedish and finnish.) by Charlie Chaplin. Apparently he wrote this speech for his 70th birthday on the 16th of april 1959. Enjoy! Love!

I truly hope and wish we can all step onto this trail and begin our journey towards respecting and loving ourselves. Some trails are more bumpy than others, it takes time to mature and come to terms with life and what it teaches us. And come to realize what matters to us, each and individually.

As I Began to Love Myself, I found that anguish and emotional suffering
are only warning signs that I was living against my own truth.
Today, I know, this is “AUTHENTICITY”.
As I began to love myself I understood how much it can offend somebody
As I try to force my desires on this person, even though I knew the time
was not right and the person was not ready for it, and even though this
person was me. Today I call it “RESPECT”.
As I began to love myself I stopped craving for a different life,
and I could see that everything that surrounded me was inviting me to grow.
Today I call it “MATURITY”.
As I began to love myself I understood that at any circumstance,
I am in the right place at the right time, and everything happens
at the exactly right moment. So I could be calm.
Today I call it “SELF-CONFIDENCE”.
As I began to love myself I quit steeling my own time,
and I stopped designing huge projects for the future.
Today, I only do what brings me joy and happiness, things I love to do
and that make my heart cheer, and I do them in my own way and in
my own rhythm. Today I call it “SIMPLICITY”.
As I began to love myself I freed myself of anything that is no good for
my health – food, people, things, situations, and everything that drew
me down and away from myself. At first I called this attitude
a healthy egoism. Today I know it is “LOVE OF ONESELF”.
As I began to love myself I quit trying to always be right, and ever since
I was wrong less of the time. Today I discovered that is “MODESTY”.
As I began to love myself I refused to go on living in the past and worry
about the future. Now, I only live for the moment, where EVERYTHING
is happening. Today I live each day, day by day, and I call it “FULFILLMENT”.
As I began to love myself I recognized that my mind can disturb me
and it can make me sick. But as I connected it to my heart, my
mind became a valuable ally. Today I call this
connection “WISDOM OF THE HEART”.
We no longer need to fear arguments, confrontations or any kind of problems
with ourselves or others. Even stars collide, and out of their crashing
new worlds are born.Today I know THAT IS “LIFE”!

Tänään tiedän, SE ON ELÄMÄÄ!

This is riduculous!

A few weeks ago I told you how my adopted Streptocarpus was in bloom, and how happy and proud I was.

Well, now it has gone mad...this is how it looks like today:

According to a secret source, all it requires to bloom is a friendly environment.

I have lost count how many flowers are in bloom! This is ridiculous!

Some people...

... like to build cupboards on days off.
I have a corner on my veranda, where the electical centre is located, and the electrical work is still in progress. I have planned to build a cupboard for the electical centre and all sorts, you know, shoepolish, tools, shoppingbags, some recykling bins, the hoover...
I even bought an antique window to use as a door.

Here is the corner waiting for someone to please get on with it!

Then it was time to actually start. The base. It looks very small.

Then the frame took shape and we managed to get the hinges right. We called it a day once we hung the door in place.

Today we built the shelves and painted the inside of the cupboard.

Tomorrow we add walls and then wallpaper the lot. I have an old lacecurtain that seems to be almost perfect for the door, I just need to make a few small adjustments to the size.

I cannot wait for it to be ready and hide plenty of stuff!

It has been lovely and sunny the past days, as if summer suddenly started. Oh my, have we waited! This sort of weather transforms people to the better.

Enjoy! Take care and love!

Win win situations

I made a small shelf of old books. I've done a few previously, but some of you are guilty of saying how you wish you had one, I end up giving them away, which is great, I don't feel a need to keep things I make and I feel honored and flattered that my friends like stuff I make. But now I needed to brush up the knot-technique as I thought this could be a nice project for my students now we are away from our own school and I want to keep them going with fun stuff. They all loved the idea.
I also needed a small shelf myself. So a perfect win win situation. Except that now my darling has expressed his wishes to have this one...ah bless, makes me ever so happy that he likes the stuff I make.
No probs I say, as I have now a load of books arriving later this week, friends who empty their bookshelves at home and at work are ever so happy they need not throw books away as we shall recykle them. So a perfect win win situation again.

On friday me and my mister flew to Stockholm for the weekend. It was time for my mister to claim his Christmas present. Finally! And have we waited? YES!

We walked to our hotel from the Centralstationen. We had booked two nights at the ever so cozy and charming Victory hotel in Gamla stan. We were both pleased with our stay. It was the perfect location for all our activities.
We enjoyed pancakes for breakfast, with fresh berry shots, smoothies and fruit juices. Perfect café au lait and such friendly staff. The rooms are really comfy and quiet, with spacious bathrooms and wonderful beds. All the rooms also have that little extra, some antiques and antique rugs. What I loved most in our room was this fab chandelier!

As we stayed in lovely Gamla stan (the old town), the streetview from our room was also wonderful, just look at this street lantern.

On friday evening we found our way to the Tele2 Arena, to see Adele in consert. Over 30 000 people in the audience. I have never been to such a massive venue. I somehow managed to purchase tickets to her concert! And bought our flight tickets almost immediately after. And that is how the idea of a luxury-weekend in Stockholm came about, and I manged to keep it a secret from my mister, until he opened his present on Christmas eve.

The concert was just magic. Here is one of my absolute favorites, Set fire to the Rain. I can't believe we even got to enjoy it live. Here I have just arrived...

On saturday it was such a beautiful day, we walked about and in the afternoon met my misters family. We had trad. shrimp on toast and coffee at a lovely café, or rather a taditional patisserie, called Vetekatten. We then strolled towards Gamla stan and took farewell and see you soon!

In the evening we walked to Söder, to Krukmakaregatan. I had booked a table at the ever so lovely Delicatessen bistro. We both decided to skip starters and had delicious pollock-fish for main course. I enjoyed sparkling wine and my mister had a beer. For desert L had french toast, which he absolutely loved and I chose chocolate with a sweet dessert wine, that I cannot remember the name of, hih!
So many times I have walked past the bistro and thought, oh my, it sure looks inviting, but have not dined there previously. So now I also got to make a dream come true, and in the company of my darling!
The music is wonderful, the air and the interior of the old fire station, well, I was sooooo happy I got to enjoy it!
Please google Delicatessen bistro bar for pictures, it is a real treat. What we noticed, or actually my mister pointed it out, that the staff really seem to enjoy their jobs there, you can sense it. The guys in the bar for ex. seemed so happy!

This charmer looked after our coats.
And in the background the sweetest ever waiter.

We then walked along the beautiful streets of Söder, looked at the lovely old houses and the sea.
We are privileged to enjoy such a good life. I know I can speak for the both of us.

Stockholm is a wonderful destination for a weekend get-away or luxury-weekend. I have lived in Stockholm in the 90´s, I still love going back to visit.

Tack Stockholm! Tack älskade för ett underbart veckoslut! God Jul!
